HUGH MARTELL, VANCOUVER, BC...Mentor and photo buddy!

HUGH MARTELL is a master in using contrasts of colors and textures, lights and shadows, lines and angles to add strength to his photography. He always uses light sources to his advantage, making otherwise ordinary pictures, dynamic. One thing he taught me was to be aware of the power in angles, like in his photos below. Not only do they show views taken from different camera angles, they also show angles in the composition.

HOW DID HUGH learn all this photo stuff? Let's ask him.

"I took photography in early high school and hated it
...all that weird technical stuff like f-stops and shutter speeds, and those smelly chemical fumes in the darkrooms. No thanks.

Fast forward 6 years. While at university, I worked during summer months prospecting for various mining companies in the wilds of the Yukon. I witnessed incredible scenery and wildlife and wanted to share those adventures with friends and family. I just had to have a camera. And so my first purchase was a Pentax Spotmatic SLR in 1968. A hobby soon turned serious when the shutterbug bit me hard. A wedding here, a portrait there, and so I quit my job in camera sales, after 10 years in the business, and began a self-taught professional career.

Even though I earn much of my living from photography, I still love to shoot for my own pleasure, discovering visual treasures wherever in the world I happen to be."

GRAB YOUR CAMERA...Let's go shoot!

"Thanks, Hugh, for sharing your knowledge, enthusiasm and photo shoots with me, a fledgling shutter bug who also got swept up in the excitement of photography.  You somehow managed to take the mystery out of f-stops and aperture settings.  You always told me, 'Don't worry about all that stuff--one day it will just fall into place.'

You were right, Hugh. Piece of cake!"
